“Art has always been a part of me. I don’t think I could have a normal life without art. As a child, while other children were playing “tag” or “it,” I would be drawing and painting. My summers were full of creating art. Early off, I was influenced by the adventure and excitement of the pioneer movement. As an adult, African American art has become very important to me. It allows me to share ideas and events from the past and bring them into the present. Mostly, I try to be true to myself, learning from other cultures and beliefs as well as my own.” – SM
